The digital displays for frame speed and exposed film lengths are clearly legible even under bright studio lights. All functional elements and displays are logically arranged and easy to operate.
The heart of the new Arriflex model is the reflex system with rotating mirror shutter developed by Arnold & Richter. The variable shutter can be locked in three positions to give optimum film exposure at all times: settings of 180º, 172.8º and 144º ensure that the frame speed is adapted to the mains frequency when HMI/CID discharge lamps are used for lighting.
This is also the focal point of the innovative development work of the Munich camera manufacturers: the viewing magnifier can be rotated through 360º. The ground glasses--with different format marks for film/TV and, of course, inter-changeable--now offer clearly recognizable image limitation lines even in critical lighting conditions: fluorescent illuminated frame markings of infinitely variable light intensity avoid the need for light-consuming beam splitters for format masks. Another novelty: troublesome steaming up of the eyepiece caused by changing temperatures can now be prevented by means of a heated eyecup.
The viewfinder extension with swing-in contrast filter was developed to give the cameraman more freedom of movement - even when using 300 m (1000 ft) magazines and tripod. The result: easy viewing. The viewfinder extension which can be screwed in between magnifier and eyepiece, was further improved for the 35 BL 4: it now has a great light-gathering capacity and offers continuously variable image magnification with a bright viewfinder image and optimum focus control. The viewfinder image can be magnified up to two times for better assessment of image sections.
While making constant advances in camera technology, Arnold & Richter are also working on designing new Arriflex high-performance lenses all the time. To ensure quick and easy lens changes and thus to ensure optimum lens selection at all times, the 35 BL 4 is equipped with a 54 mm PL mount made of chrome nickel steel, whose bayonet ring firmly locks the lens with PL mount. The necessary adapters are available for lenses with a mount diameter of 41 mm.
A new feature of the 35 BL 4 is the adjustable lens carrier, which allows precise alignment of the optical axis to the center of the film. This enhancement guarantees unrestricted use of full aperture or Super 35 format.
The film transport system is also of technically sophisticated design. In conjunction with the precision film guide, it guarantees optimum image steadiness at all times.
The movement of combined joint/crank/cam design runs very quietly and yet precisely: dual registration pins ensure that any image steadiness deviations which may occur cannot exceed 1% of the frame height.

The high-tech Arriflex 35 BL 4 is easy to operate. All operating and control elements are logically arranged and easy to locate--for checking and setting the frame rate and for controlling the audible signal of the out-of-sync monitor. The sockets for accessory and camera connections, as well as the quick-change fuse. The digital displays for frame rate and length of exposed film are clearly legible, even in bright studio lights. The magazines are fitted with an analog display for the unexposed length of film in meters/feet.
